Sculptural Lidded Box

Beautiful handcrafted sculptural box by American wood artist Jeffrey Seaton, created from richly figured Mountain Lilac burl and retaining a dramatic portion of the tree’s natural live edge.

Rather than disguising the irregular burl formation, Seaton incorporated it directly into the design, contrasting the highly polished, smoothly shaped body with the rugged natural exterior of the wood. The fitted lid follows the organic triangular form of the box, with beautifully figured burl grain throughout.

Jeffrey Seaton is known for his finely crafted sculptural wooden boxes and use of unusual, highly figured hardwoods. His work is characterized by carefully finished surfaces that emphasize the natural color, grain and individual character of the wood.

Original handwritten identification label underneath lid reads “Mountain Lilac Burl.”

Artist signed and dated 1989 underneath lid.

Measures 5” long x 3 1/2” wide x 2” tall.

CONDITION:

Very good vintage condition with natural inclusions, fissures, voids and irregularities inherent to the burl and live-edge construction, along with minor age-related surface wear. The natural bark/burl edge remains beautifully preserved and is an intentional part of the sculptural design. See photos for details.
