A nice piece of vintage New Hampshire ski and resort ephemera, it opens up with wine menu pasted to one page, and a clip on opposite page holding Sunday Dinner menu, and informational sheet on the Schloss-Mittersill Club in Salzburg, Austria, associated with the resort’s owner Hubert Pantz, a former Austrian baron.

The featured Sunday Dinner menu is specifically dated October 13, 1963 and offers a wonderful snapshot of dining at Mittersill during the resort’s classic mid-century era. Entrées include Wiener Schnitzel, roast spring lamb, Jersey pork chops, calf’s liver, filet mignon, fried sea scallops and chicken, with prices ranging from $3.75 to $5.50.

Also included is the extensive wine list, notable for its introductory text discussing Mittersill owner Hubert Pantz, described as a former Austrian baron and American citizen. The list includes French, German, Italian, California and New York wines, with recommendations for pairing them with the restaurant’s dishes.

Especially interesting is the additional Schloss Mittersill Club – Salzburg, Austria page. It describes the historic 12th-century Schloss Mittersill, its association with the Salzburg archiepiscopal princes, and its later operation as an international sporting club under Baron Hubert Pantz. This provides a direct historical connection between the New Hampshire Mittersill resort and its Austrian namesake.

SOME HISTORY:

Mittersill’s history is particularly remarkable. Founder Baron Hubert von Pantz came from an old Austrian noble family and acquired the medieval Schloss Mittersill in Austria during the 1930s. He transformed the castle into an exclusive international sporting and social club that attracted European aristocracy, wealthy industrialists and prominent international guests. Following Nazi Germany’s annexation of Austria in 1938, von Pantz fled to the United States and ultimately settled in Franconia, New Hampshire. There he recreated the Alpine atmosphere of his Austrian club, establishing Mittersill Alpine Resort and its Tyrolean-style village in 1945.

CONDITION:

Excellent, vintage pre-owned condition. The red outer folder shows some surface wear, small marks and edge/corner wear. Interior pages are clean, with minor wear from metal clip. Some paper remains attached to back from being preserved in a scrapbook. See photos for details.
