Original October 1944 Liberty Restaurant menu from 1501 East Passyunk Avenue, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania — a wonderful piece of South Philadelphia restaurant and neighborhood history dating to the final year of World War II.

Measures 10” x 6 1/2” closed.

The Liberty Restaurant was operated by Tomassini and Berti, whose names appear on the front cover beneath an illustration of the Statue of Liberty. Particularly interesting is the address: 1501 E. Passyunk Avenue, the corner property that today houses P.O.P.E. (Pub on Passyunk East), making this a tangible record of an earlier business occupying a familiar present-day South Philadelphia location.

The interior opens to a large a la carte menu featuring an extensive selection of period Italian-American and American dishes, including antipasto, spaghetti, scallopini, veal chops, chicken, liver and kidneys, steaks, omelettes, vegetables, salads, desserts and “Special Blue Platters.”

The prices provide a fascinating snapshot of wartime Philadelphia dining. Examples include:

The green cardstock cover has attractive period typography and a small Statue of Liberty illustration. Interior printing is exceptionally evocative of the era, right down to the notice along the bottom: “Not Responsible for Any Articles Missing or Stolen.” The menu is dated October 1944 on the back.
