Collection comes from the estate of James Smart, featured editor, reporter, and columnist of Philadelphia, with this being the first paper he contributed to!
Includes Northeast High School’s Megaphone Newspapers from 1943 to 1948.
25th edition of The Northeast Megaphone included with large red “25” printed on front page.
Lot of 45+ issues with a few duplicates.
April 1st “April Fools” issue noted with the changed newspaper title of “The Northeast Megaphony”, and false article about atom bomb being tested in the city reservoir.
Collection also includes:
- Invitation to Northeast Revue of 1948, a Philadelphia Mardi Gras concert and play at Morrison Hall on April 29, 30, as well as May 1, 6-8, 1948.
- Sports team photo in sepia includes “The Phillips Studio / 1507 Walnut St. / Philadelphia, PA” stamped on back.
School newspapers measure 16” x 11” that fold out to four panels of 10 pages each including front and back covers. Stored folded up.
Mardi Gras invitation measures 9” x 6” and opens to 6 pages including covers.
Sports team photo measures 7 1/2” x 9 1/2”.
James Smart started out as an editor for his high school newspaper, The Northeast Megaphone, before becoming a copyboy and eventually a reporter and columnist of the Bulletin. He was most known for his column titled “In Our Town” from 1959 to 1973 that focused on Philadelphia city life, history and community culture. He also wrote for The Inquirer about the Revolutionary War, the 1976 national bicentennial, and more.
CONDITION:
Excellent vintage, preowned condition. Newspapers are in various degrees of discoloration from age. Creases and tears to folds of some newspapers. Some stains seen on few issues. Small writings on certain pages. Mardi Gras invitation has staining from age, as well as light creasing to pages. Team photo has slight folds and creasing at edges. Leftover tape pieces stuck to back. Small stain on bottom right corner. See photos for details.
