1939

Softcover

1st Edition

Intro (& Cover Illustration?) by Hendrik Willem Van Loon

Published jointly by Modern Age Books, Inc. and Alliance Book Corporation in New York, 1939

“The New Inquisition” by Konrad Heiden is a first American edition, first softcover printing, published in 1939. This is Heiden’s extremely rare account of his views of the Hitler regime and the events beginning on the night of Nov. 9, 1938, known thereafter as the Night of the Hatchets or the Night of Broken Glass, and what they portended for the future of Jews in Germany.

Within 24 hours damage to Jewish businesses and property would exceed 1.5 billion marks and scores of thousands of people would be thrown into concentration camps.

Heiden’s account was published in this 1939 edition barely one year after the Night of Broken Glass. The book appeared in New York as the Battle of Britain was raging and the United States was only starting to rouse from its isolationist lethargy.

Heiden's book includes some of the earliest firsthand reports popularly read in America from Jews who fell victim to torture and internment at Dachau near Munich, Sachsenhausen or Oranienburg near Berlin, or Buchenwald near Weimar following the mass arrests of 1938.”
