An especially appealing signed 1st edition copy of Richard Eberhart’s Selected Poems 1930–1965, the collection for which Eberhart was awarded the 1966 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. Published by New Directions in 1965, the volume gathers work spanning more than three decades of Eberhart’s career, from his earliest collections through The Quarry (1964), together with previously unpublished poems.

Personally inscribed by Richard Eberhart on the title page, apparently reading:

The 1966 date is particularly notable, as this was the same year Selected Poems 1930–1965 received the Pulitzer Prize.

The original photographic wrappers feature a portrait of Eberhart by celebrated French photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson, with cover design credited to David Ford.

About Richard Eberhart:

Richard Eberhart (1904–2005) was one of the major American poets of the 20th century, with a literary career spanning more than seven decades. Born in Austin, Minnesota, Eberhart studied at Dartmouth College, St. John’s College, Cambridge, and Harvard. During World War II he served as a gunnery officer in the U.S. Navy, an experience that inspired one of his best-known works, The Fury of Aerial Bombardment. He later taught at numerous universities and spent much of his academic career at Dartmouth College.

Eberhart served as Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress from 1959–1961, the position now associated with the U.S. Poet Laureate, and later served as Poet Laureate of New Hampshire from 1979–1984. In addition to the Pulitzer Prize for this collection, his honors included the Bollingen Prize, Shelley Memorial Award, Robert Frost Medal, and the National Book Award for Collected Poems 1930–1976.

CONDITION:

Excellent, vintage pre-owned condition. Covers exhibit light toning/discoloration, light soiling, edge and corner wear. Interior pages show general age toning but appear clean and well preserved overall. Author’s inscription and signature remain bold and clearly legible. See photos for details.
