History of Das Beer Boot:

The beer boot, or “bierstiefel” in German, is more than a party favor or movie prop. Beer boots are an iconic piece of German history. The beer boot traces back to Germanic tribes during the height of the Roman Empire who would drink from stoneware shaped like boots prior to battle.

Drinking, or chugging, a beer boot can be traced back to a Prussian general in Berlin who lost a bet with his soldiers, meaning he had to drink beer out of his boots at the next celebration. In an effort to avoid sweaty boot beer, the general had a glass boot commissioned by a local glass blower. Awestruck, his soldiers had their own glass boots made and started a tradition.
