History:
Founded in 1911 in Providence, Rhode Island by Katharine Gibbs (often misspelled Katherine), the Katharine Gibbs School became the premier U.S. finishing-style business college for women—famous for turning out “Gibbs Girls” trained in shorthand, typing, bookkeeping, and exacting office etiquette. Through the 1920s–50s it expanded to major East Coast cities and earned a reputation with Wall Street and Madison Avenue employers for polished, job-ready graduates. In later decades it became co-ed and evolved into a career college offering associate programs in business, design, and technology; most campuses were phased out or closed by the early 2010s.
