Simon Snyder was an American politician who served as the third Governor of Pennsylvania from 1808 to 1817. He was born on November 5, 1759, in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and died on November 9, 1819, in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania.
Snyder began his political career as a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, where he served from 1797 to 1807. He was elected governor in 1808 as a Democratic-Republican, defeating incumbent Thomas McKean.
During his tenure as governor, Snyder focused on promoting economic development in Pennsylvania, particularly in agriculture and manufacturing. He supported the construction of roads and canals and worked to expand public education. He also championed the rights of Native Americans and opposed the forced removal of indigenous peoples from their lands.
Snyder was reelected to two more terms as governor, serving until 1817. After leaving office, he retired to his farm in Selinsgrove, where he died in 1819. Snyder County, Pennsylvania, was named in his honor.
