NEW MAP OF ASIA Map / Brochure w/ Info & Photos
by C. S. Hammond / Haskin
w/ Manchukuo, INTERWAR BORDERS, Saudi-Kuwait Neutral Zone
Offered here is an original “New Map of Asia” produced by C.S. Hammond & Co. and distributed through U.S. newspapers by Haskin in the mid-1930’s (c. 1935). This map captures a remarkably narrow geopolitical moment known as the Interwar Era — after the rise of the Soviet Union, but before World War II redrew borders across Asia and the Middle East. The reverse features various information panels with photos.
Measures 28” x 21” unfolded.
Several historically significant features make this sheet stand out:
- Manchukuo (1932–1945) - A short-lived Japanese puppet state carved from Manchuria. Maps showing Manchukuo are highly collectible because the territory existed only during a small slice of history.
- The Saudi–Kuwait Neutral Zone (1922–1969) - One of the most unusual border arrangements of the 20th century — a jointly administered desert strip where sovereignty remained deliberately undefined. Its presence here is a key dating indicator and draws interest from oil history researchers.
- “Siam” instead of Thailand (name changed in 1939) - This terminology firmly places the map in the years before that nationalist shift.
- Nanking listed as China’s capital (1928–1937) - Another precise dating clue, predating the capital’s move due to Japanese invasion.
- Aden Protectorate & Hadhramaut - Labeled as British-controlled territory — a colonial footprint no longer visible on post-war maps.
- Pre-Partition British India - No Pakistan, Bangladesh, or 1947 boundaries yet — a clean look at the Raj.
Taken together, these clues place this map squarely in 1935–1936, before the Second Sino-Japanese War and just on the eve of global realignment.
The color lithography is beautifully preserved, showing Asia in soft pastel tones that frame exceptionally well. Folding remains as originally issued as brochure in the newspaper.
