Panama Canal Construction Photo
McClintic Marshall Unloading Lock Gates
S.S. Venus
6x8
Original sepia photograph showing a large steel lock-gate component or related fabricated steel section being unloaded from the S.S. “Venus,” dated May 2 to May 19, 1911. The reverse includes period handwritten notations reading approximately: “Unloading first cargo Ex. S.S. ‘Venus’ May 2 to 19th 1911,” along with a lower pencil inscription referencing “McClintic Marshall,” “unloading lock gates,” and “Gates for Panama Canal.”
McClintic-Marshall Construction Co. of Pittsburgh was the firm contracted to furnish and erect the massive steel lock gates for the original Panama Canal locks, making this a highly interesting construction-era photograph tied directly to one of the canal’s major engineering components.
A rare original image connected to the building of the Panama Canal before its 1914 opening.
Measures 6” x 8”.
CONDITION:
Antique, pre-owned condition with age toning, surface wear, creasing, edge/corner wear, and some bends/handling marks. Reverse has handwritten annotations and additional age-related discoloration/wear. See photos for details.
