Born in Austin, Minnesota, Eberhart studied at Dartmouth College, St. John’s College, Cambridge, and Harvard. During World War II he served as a gunnery officer in the U.S. Navy, an experience that inspired one of his best-known works, The Fury of Aerial Bombardment. He later taught at numerous universities and spent much of his academic career at Dartmouth College. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eEberhart served as Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress from 1959–1961, the position now associated with the U.S. Poet Laureate, and later served as Poet Laureate of New Hampshire from 1979–1984.
